Sleepers 101

Hi everyone and welcome to our very first blog post!

Today we’re starting something new on the blog, a 101 series to tell you everything you need to know about some of the products we have available at Knox Sawmills. From what it is, what its’s for, the best ways to use it and what we can do for you – we’ll use our expertise to cover it all.

Today’s 101 is sleepers, aka railway sleepers. Now I’m sure you all know that sleepers are a great multiuse product and if not here’s why;

They can be used for:

  • Landscaping
  • Retaining walls
  • Decking and patios
  • Water features
  • Raised flower beds

You can even make tables, benches and steps out of them! The possibilities as they say are endless.

All of these are great ways to add a something extra to your garden whilst using an alternative to bricks or stone, and the above list might just give you a few ideas when planning or carrying out work in the garden.

Now when it comes to the best ways to use sleepers we have to admit we think they are great for retaining soil in the garden or used to create raised beds for anything from vegetable patches to flower beds. Check out the photos below to show you the different ways you can get creative when using sleepers and make them really stand out.

We offer both oak* and softwood sleepers in a range of sizes to suit your needs.

*Oak sleepers are only available in one size
